For those strategic companies sold to Chinese owners pre-FDI screening, Europe could try to buy some back, but without coercing the owners into selling them, according to van der Putten.
For him, the next challenge is for Europe to demonstrate that it can defend these investments from third-party interference, including from the US, once they are approved.
"If the EU cannot protect foreign direct investments from third-party interference, it will become less attractive as an investment destination," he said.
